Note: People wishing to ride from South Orange to Branch Brook PArk can join SOMbike's Kirk Sohr. It's about seven miles. Meetup: The Baird Center, 5 Mead St., at noon. Age 12 and over, please. If you're driving the bikes over, there's parking on the perimeter, and we'll meet you at the lake. (All ages)

Announcing the 2011 Newark Branchbrook Park Cherry Blossom Bike Tour!
Sunday, April 10 @ 1pm

This year's tour is dedicated to the fallen sakura bikers of Japan. (See attached poster and text below it...)

Please download the poster and post it or fwd it to friends. Different sized posters and Newark maps are available at (after March 25)

Come see one of Newark's jewels... cherry blossoms in beautiful Branchbrook Park!
Come for the blossoms, come for the ride, come for the sunshine, come for the exercize, come for the memory of our fallen comrades in Japan, or come to see a beautiful part of Newark you never knew existed.

This is not a race or tour of Newark. This is a fun theme ride for the whole family. You'll be seeing all of Branchbrook Park and a few surrounding neighborhoods. But, mostly, you'll be here to see a breathtaking collection of cherry trees at peak bloom!

We've made the route a bit easier this year to accomodate trikes and kids (you won't be lifting your bike over railroad tracks ;). We also have more assistants and staff this year to help you fix your bike and find your way. In order to maximize your blossom time, we'll be giving you a map of paths through groves that we suggest you walk your bike through instead of seeing it all from the road.

Date: Sunday, April 10.
Rain date: Sunday, April 17
Length: approx. 9 miles
Ride level: easy
Cost: $5 per person
Maps to get to the park are available at (after March 25)
Maps of the tour route will be handed to everyone who registers on the day of the event.

In case of questionable weather the day of the event, go to our website that morning for a postponement notice.

Last year we had about 100 riders. This year we're ready for more! Please tell everyone about this event.
If you have any questions please email me at

See you there!

SOMbike Family Ride, Coming Up This SATURDAY

To accommodate riders who cannot make it on Sunday, SOMbike is going to add a regular Saturday ride to its scheduled family rides. The starting time will be 10 AM. The meet-up will be in the Baird Center Parking lot, 5 Mead St., South Orange. This Saturday, March 26th.
If you haven't experienced the new bike path along the river and seen the amazing native plantings, this is a great time to do that at a leisurely pace. An egret was spotted on the bank of the river last week! Hope you can join us! All ages welcome, of course, free of charge.

First Family Ride Draws Two Dozen Riders

What's really cool about having a scheduled ride, is that it motivates you to get out of bed, dressed, out the door and moving. We had five families and a few adults riding with us, from baby in a bike seat to adults with kids in college. The weather started out cold and gray, but ended up with some sun peaking through. We all road to the South Mountain Reservation on Glen. Some continued all the way to South Orange Ave. Others turned around and rode back to Maplewood. Listening to parents instructing their kids about changing gears, riding in traffic, paying attention - these are the kids who'll be riding their whole lives and loving it. So, thank you parents for teaching your children well!

See you Saturday, March 26th, at 10 AM, at the Baird Center in South Orange for the next ride!
