A friend of mine showed me this picture. I know nothing of it. Handwriting on it says 1898.
The clothing all looks non-athletic-specific except for the plus-fours (which we Americans call knickers). Perhaps the hats are cycling specific. I have a couple like that, recreated in that style, made of light-weight wool.
The tires are not pneumatic. The forks have foot pegs. That's because the bikes are fixed-gear and could not coast. It was quite a feat to climb these mountains. It still is, but it was more so then.
